Tonka Toys introduced its Aerial Sand Loader in 1955. The company worked for three years on the design before putting the toy into production. It's a model of loaders used on the ore docks on Lake Superior. The loader was sold in a set that included a dump truck. (The truck is also on this site in the Toys and Dolls categorie. Sold seperatly. Also never used.) Tonka Toys started out as Mound Metalcraft, which was founded by Lynn Everett Baker, Avery F. Tesch in Mound Minn., in 1946. Mound started out making racks for hats, shoes and ties as well as rakes, hoes, shovels and other garden equipment. Within a year, the company had expanded its line to include toys and was using"Tonka," a Dakota Sioux word meaning "great" or "big" in its advertising. The company's name was changed to Tonka Toys in 1956. Tonka was bought by Hasbro in 1991.
